Eastpointe Guy Gets Year Behind Bars For Selling Fake Auto Insurance

A 64-year-old Macomb County guy has been sentenced to 1 year in jail for selling fake auto insurance certificates.

Hakeem Sanusi of Eastpointe, obtained his sentence Thursday after earlier pleading no contest to 6 counts of insurance fraud like a habitual offender.

Sanusi was arrested within September after secretary of state staff suspected consumers had sent in fake insurance certificates to renew their particular license plate tabs.

Eaton County Prosecutor Doug Lloyd stated an investigation revealed which Sanusi falsely claimed to be a representative for an insurance company and offered insurance coverage to numerous persons, issuing bogus certificates to verify evidence of insurance. During a search of Sanusi’s house, extra insurance binder forms were seized.

“Hakeem Sanusi’s crimes are portion of a growing state-wide issue of drivers carrying fake auto insurance certificates, occasionally without the drivers knowing their policies aren't real, ” Lloyd said within a statement. “About one-fifth of insurance certificates presented inside Wayne County, where Sanusi managed, are invalid. The general public is impacted whenever they find that the other driver doesn't have valid insurance, and repair and also medical bills aren't as easily reimbursed. ”

This crimes included conducting a criminal enterprise, uttering and publishing, id theft, and possession/sale of stolen or even counterfeit insurance certificates.
